Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ship my boxes to storage from one location and retrieve them later from a different location?

Of course. Just sign up using the address where you're located now. Later you can enter your new shipping address into your StorageByMail address book.

How big of a box can I ship?

If it conforms to USPS Parcel Post size and weight restrictions we'll take it. That means your box must weigh less than 70 lbs and the combined length + girth must be less than 130". However, practically speaking we recommend keeping your boxes under 35lbs. There's a limit to what a cardboard box can handle.

Will the USPS come get my boxes?

Absolutely. Just visit the USPS.com website and click on the Schedule-a-Pickup link. You can schedule your pickup as late as 2am CST the evening before you want the USPS to come. StorageByMail shipping labels take care of the postage. Just be sure to select "Merchandise Return Service" as the type of mail when you're scheduling your pickup.

I prefer UPS or Fedex. Can I use them instead of USPS?

Sure. Just call or email us and we'll help you make the arrangements.

Can I upgrade my storage subscription if I need more space?

Yep, just give us a call.

Can I retreive my boxes before the end of my storage subscription?

Yes, you can rotate boxes in and out of storage as often as you need to. If you exceed your allotment of free-shipping credits we'll just bill your account for the additional postage.

How do the Free Shipping Credits work?

All of our subscriptions of six months or longer include a certain number of free-shipping credits to help subsidize the cost of getting your boxes into and out of storage. For example, the 10-box annual plan includes 20 shipping credits that have a retail postage value of $25.00 each. You can use those to send 10 boxes to storage and then to get them back when you're ready. If the postage on any individual box shipment exceeds the $25.00 limit we'll bill you the difference.

USPS Pickup Options

The best way to get your boxes into storage is to make use of one of the pickup services from the United States Postal Service. After all, who wants to lug their boxes to the post office when the USPS will do it for you?

The first thing you need to know is that the USPS actually offers two different types of pickup services:

Carrier Pickup
Carrier Pickup is completely free. All you have to do is let the USPS know how many boxes you

and they'll be sure to send an appropriate pickup vehicle collect the boxes during your mailcarrier's usual rounds. This is particularly helpful if you live in an urban area and are used to the USPS showing up with a little pushcart.

Pickup On Demand
Pickup on Demand, is great when you're busy and want to make sure the USPS collects your boxes at a specific time. It'll cost you an extra $15.30 for the added convenience but you're guaranteed of USPS showing up during the two hour window that you specify.

Regardless of which option you choose be sure to submit your pickup request no later than 2:00 AM (CST) on the day your pickup is scheduled. Click the button below when you're ready to get started.

When scheduling your pickup with the USPS choose "Merchandise Return Service" as the type of mail.

How to Guides

How to pack a box properly

Follow these three simple rules and your box won't end up looking like this one:

  1. Fill the box completely. If there's empty space add packing peanuts or other cushioning material. This provides internal support to prevent the cardboard from crushing.
  2. Choose the right size box for the job. Small and heavy items like books should go in a small box. Light-weight things like clothing are safe to pack in a large box.
  3. Keep it under 35 lbs. If you can comfortably lift the box you're probably OK. But if you have to strain there's a good chance you've overpacked the box
  4. Use lot's of tape. Tape is cheap but your property is priceless. Go nuts.

How to pack and ship a bicycle

Storing your bicycle by mail is easier than you think. Just peddle on over to your local bike shop with your StorageByMail shipping label in hand. They'll be more than happy to help you out. Travis from Mad Dog Cycles in Utah demonstrates how it's done in this short video.

How to pack and ship luggage

To ship your luggage all you really need to do is wrap it in something that will protect it from dirt and scuffs. We find that warehouse-grade plastic wrap works quite nicely. Just wrap your suitcase or rolling bag as demonstrated in the video and attach a StorageByMail shipping label to the outside. And no you don't have to run out and buy and expensive machine like the one shown. Just head over to Staples or Uline and order a roll of plastic cling wrap from the shipping supplies section.
